Sharks Finish Road Trip With Shootout Loss to Penguins

(Originally published at Sports Radio Service)

For the second time this season, the Sharks and the Penguins went to a shootout to resolve a tied score. This time, the Penguins prevailed, jumping over the New York Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division. The Sharks earned a single point but despite having a four on three power play for most of overtime, they could not grab the extra point that they urgently needed to keep fighting for a playoff spot. On the bright side, Al Stalock was featured in the NBC save of the game. Stalock was starting the second of back to back games, after playing Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The shootout winner was scored by Pittsburgh’s David Perron. Patric Hornqvist and Chris Kunitz also scored for Pittsburgh. Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves on 32 shots for the win. Ben Smith and Logan Couture scored for the Sharks and Al Stalock made 31 saves on 33 shots for the Sharks. (more…)

Sharks’ Win Streak Ends With 5-1 Loss to Pens

(Originally published at Sports Radio Service)

The San Jose Sharks were overwhelmed Thursday, by a team they had handled very well in past meetings. The final score was 5-1 Penguins. The Sharks had their work cut out for them in Pittsburgh, as Sidney Crosby has still never scored against the Sharks, so that was and is probably on his to do list. The job got much bigger when the Sharks went down 4-0 with just over half of the game remaining. That hole was too deep for San Jose to climb out of. (more…)

When to Wear White

I am vaguely confused about how teams decide when to wear their white jerseys.  Some teams even call them their “road jerseys,” which makes me think it is supposed to be done by the visiting team.  I know that some time in the last decade, the tradition changed, it used to be that the home team wore white.  I have noticed some teams doing the reverse, at least during the last month or so.

In any case, the Pens are playing in Ottawa and the Sens are wearing white.  The Sens are also winning.  When I tried to decide which game to watch today, it was hard to choose between this game and the Devils-Maple Leafs game.  I am vaguely curious to see if Lemaire has worked any wonders in his first couple of days back in Jersey, but I also really wanted to see if the Sens could surprise.  The former seemed more likely, what with the Pens being on a winning streak.  I was wrong. Talking ‘Bout Bad, Bad Girls

Some days ago, Puck Huffers wrote about a new promotional project the Penguins are putting together.  The press release from the Pens looked something like this:

The Pittsburgh Penguins will introduce a skating “Ice Crew” for the 2010-11 season – a team of energetic girls and guys who will help clean the ice, interact with fans and take part in other promotional activities…

“We’ll be looking for energy, athleticism and passion for the Penguins,” said James Santilli, the team’s vice president of marketing. (from Penguins News )

Who they're really looking for

This Ice Crew has been the subject of some debate and several complaints from fans- mostly women fans.  The complaints are about the actual eligibility requirements, which mentions bare midriffs, hair styles, manicure instructions, makeup suggestions, and a general emphasis on modeling experience over skating ability or hockey knowledge.

Some people are upset because this goes against the Penguin tradition of no ice girls.  Some say it is non-family oriented.  Others complain that it is just plain demeaning and offensive to women.

All of that may be true.  Like others, I am bothered by it because it reminds me that I don’t look like that.  But that is my own fault, my own choice.  What really bugs me, in a way that isn’t my fault, is the hypocrisy, the sneakiness.  Also that the sneakiness is badly done sneakiness because it only takes seconds to see through the ruse.  It is entirely demeaning to women, even women with nice figures and no skating ability whatsoever. Bedtime Stories

If I hear one more talking head blame MAF for the Canadiens’ victory I’m gonna… well, I suppose I will simply continue to be very cross.  They might as well blame other Penguins for bad Karma.  Or they could get really wild and crazy and dwell on the fact that the Habs are playing very well.  But no, they pick on MAF.  By the same simple-minded drooler logic they credit Habs goalie Halak with winning everything.  They remind me of uninspired pop stars dazzled by their  success into vapid repetition of the same short cue card lines.  I don’t care how much talent these paid opinion-givers were born lacking, there is no excuse for not trying to untangle the more complicated (not very, but a little more complex) story.  I don’t know if they are being honest.  But I do know they are not even TRYING to be original.  A very little try would go a long way here. Round Up: A Lament and A Lie

About Last Night: Hawkish

Wow am I sad about Vancouver. I didn’t even care about Vancouver. It was just so merciless. I feel like I just watched someone beat a baby seal to death. Or maybe a grown walrus. Or maybe that was the Humane Society ads getting to me before I could fast forward.  Either way, it was quite horrible. Salo tried to play, very painful injury men don’t like to talk about and all. You wouldn’t put a horse back to work that quickly after an injury like that. (more…)

None Shall Pass

History was made, and where are the NHL’s over-zealous “what if” people?  In 1955, the Montreal Canadiens had a 2 goalie shut out against the Boston Bruins. That was the last time that happened in the playoffs. The Flyers just did it again. I think the Bruins need to stop beating up goalies. It doesn’t seem to work for them.

Neither goalie gets “credit” for it, which seems abysmally unfair, especially when Boucher got hurt in the process, and Leighton, though called “back-up,” stopped more shots than the man he replaced. I would give them both credit but I can’t count so the accuracy of numbers is less significant to me than recognition.  But it reinforces my perception of the Flyers as tremendous defensive players.   A goalie’s gotta love that.
